Independent Investigations
Independent investigations and reviews for schools, higher education institutions, and not-for-profits
When there are allegations or complaints involving your staff, students, young people or children you need to establish the facts before you make any decisions. From historic abuse claims to workplace bullying, often it’s necessary to engage an external expert to lead your response process. An independent trauma-informed investigation minimises several key risks:
- Conflict of interest
- Perception of bias
- Incorrect or inefficient process
We’re not a law firm and we’re not your average workplace investigation company. We specialise in independent investigations for your sector. We combine extensive investigation experience with a strong understanding of how schools / kura, tertiary institutions, faith-based organisations, and trusts work. While other investigation companies work across industries, we bring sector-specific insights from our work in your sector. We know how your sector functions, how your people relate, and what’s at stake when issues arise.
Unlike lawyers, we focus on simply finding the facts, not legal defence or advocacy. We believe that an investigation is more than just a mechanical risk-mitigation procedure. It’s a means by which we can advocate for truth and oppose injustice in our communities. A good investigation can be an opportunity for healing, restoration and reconciliation in many cases. So, we don’t overcomplicate things. Our goal is to simply uncover what happened – impartially, fairly and with minimal disruption.
The result? Investigations and reviews that are effective, efficient and ethical.

Independent Reviews
A review is a process used when there are no specific allegations against individuals but there is still a requirement to assess and report on a specific issue, incident, or concern affecting your organisation. The process generally involves document reviews and interviews and results in a written report to inform your decision-making.

FAQ
Most investigations can be handled in-house but sometimes you do need to go external. This is usually when you want to avoid perceptions of bias, the allegations are particularly serious, or you simply don't have the time or skills. If in doubt, we recommend obtaining legal advice before committing to an investigation.
Yes. We're able to work anywhere in New Zealand or Australia. The advantage of engaging an out-of-town investigator is that it completely avoids any perception of bias or conflict of interest which might threaten the integrity of an investigation process.
Yes. For schools and higher education institutions we also investigate serious and complex matters involving students. Our clients engage us for student investigations when the stakes are high, the matter is complex, there are allegations of bias, or they simply want to take the burden off the shoulders of staff.
For employment investigations, our clients often engage a lawyer or advisor to determine whether an investigation is necessary. Once that decision is made, we then work independently your lawyer to establish the facts. Our independent report is then used to inform your decisions. This ensures your process is objective and minimises costs.
For student investigations, a lawyer isn't necessary, but may be involved if there are legal questions to answer before, during or after the fact-finding process.

Remote investigations are sometimes a viable option if you're located regionally. In a remote investigation, everything is done remotely. Interviews are conducted over Microsoft Teams or Zoom. In some cases, remote investigations can be less intrusive for the people involved.
