Independent Investigations
Independent investigations and reviews for schools, higher education institutions, and not-for-profits
Not every situation calls for a formal investigation, but when it does, it must be handled carefully. From bullying or sexual assault to fraud or serious misconduct to safeguarding breaches or historic abuse claims, these situations sometimes demand independent investigation led by an expert who understands your sector.
An independent investigation minimises several critical risks: conflict of interest, bias, and mistakes in process that could cost you. But an investigation is more than risk management. It’s an opportunity to stand for truth and justice in your community. It shows your commitment to the values your organisation stands on.
Investigations are deeply relational. They involve real people – reporting parties, victims, complainants, witnesses, and those responding to allegations. At every step, I honour the dignity, worth, and rights of everyone involved, ensuring those rights are upheld throughout the process.
Basalt Solutions is not a law firm. I specialise in independent investigations for schools, kura, tertiary institutions, faith-based organisations, and not-for-profits. I also take on select commercial and corporate investigations by request. My broad experience in education and investigations means I brings insight into your sector with the investigative rigour needed for complex, high-stakes investigations. Unlike lawyers or advocates, I don’t take sides. I focuses solely on uncovering the facts – impartially, thoroughly, and with as little disruption as possible.
The result? Investigations that are effective, efficient, ethical – and rock-solid. Investigations everyone can trust.
When a formal investigation is the right step, I’m here to make sure it’s done right. Because how you respond says everything about who you are.
Remote investigations
Not every investigation needs an in-person presence. In many cases, investigating remotely can save time and cost, reduce your environmental footprint, and still deliver the same fairness, thoroughness, and confidentiality you’d expect from an onsite process. Utilising the latest technology, you can access my extensive investigative experience from anywhere in the world.
- Start sooner - Address issues quickly before they escalate or evidence is lost.
- Lower costs – No travel expenses means more budget for your core priorities.
- Support sustainability - Reduce environmental impact while maintaining integrity.
- Access specialist expertise from anywhere – Benefit from sector-specific knowledge and expertise that may not be available locally.
- Modern methods – Secure interviews and evidence transfer with digital case management ensures efficiency with confidentiality.
If a case is particularly sensitive, requires physical evidence review or involves complex credibility assessments, I will recommend and arrange onsite attendance. We go remote when it makes sense, with the ability to be onsite if required.
Staff Misconduct Investigations
Allegations of misconduct - workplace bullying, harassment, breach of policy - require a fair and impartial investigation to establish the facts. My independent trauma-informed investigation service is trusted to deliver an impartial and legally defensible outcome without causing undue stress to those involved.
Student Misconduct Investigations
Student misconduct investigations are increasing in frequency and complexity - bullying, sexual assault, violence. Investigating these issues is time-consuming and stressful. I have experience working with children and young people as a teacher and as an investigator. I'm able to deliver fair investigations in a trauma-informed manner.
Independent Reviews
A review is a process used when there are no specific allegations against individuals but there is still a requirement to assess and report on a specific issue, incident, or concern affecting your organisation. The process generally involves document reviews and interviews and results in a written report to inform your decision-making.

FAQ
Most investigations can be handled in-house but sometimes you do need to go external. This is usually when you want to avoid perceptions of bias, the allegations are particularly serious, or you simply don't have the time or skills. If in doubt, get in touch before committing to an investigation.
Yes. I'm able to work anywhere in New Zealand, Australia or further afield. I have experience leading multi-disciplinary investigation teams with different stakeholders across international jurisdictions. And the advantage of engaging an out-of-town investigator is that it completely avoids any perception of bias or conflict of interest which might threaten the integrity of an investigation process.
Yes. This is one of the unique services I offer schools and higher education institutions. I investigate serious and complex matters involving students. Clients engage me for student investigations when the stakes are high, the matter is complex, there are allegations of bias, or they simply want to take the burden off the shoulders of staff.
For employment investigations, my clients often engage a lawyer or advisor to determine whether an investigation is necessary. Once that decision is made, I then work independently of your lawyer to establish the facts. My independent report is then used to inform your decisions.
For student investigations, a lawyer isn't necessary, but may be involved if there are legal questions to answer before, during or after the fact-finding process.
I have more than 12 years experience conducting criminal and civil investigations. My investigations have been pressure-tested and survive scrutiny. I can provide testimonials if you'd like to know more.
In a remote investigation, everything is done via phone or internet. Interviews are usually conducted over Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Documentary and electronic evidence is transferred by email on a secure, web-based file-sharing service.
